Marie-Annick Béliveau, voice
Terri Hron, recorder, electronics
Jessica Tsang, percussionDESCRIPTIONCan we transfer creative strategies from other artistic domains into music creation? Can a sequence of sounds be composed the way a choreographer composes a sequence of movements in space, a poet composes an arrangement of words, a novelist follows characters through a plot? Can music be staged the same way a director stages a play or a visual artist conceives an installation? The "Ecstasies of Influence" research-creation project will explore inter-artistic ways of conceiving, creating and composing musical performances and productions, influenced by dialogues with and transfers from other artistic practices. Involved artists in Montréal are David Szanto (conceptual/gastronomic arts), Deborah Carruthers (conceptual, ecology, multidisciplinary arts) and Angelique Willkie (body, dramaturgy). With financial support from Fonds de Recherche du Québec — Société et culture FRQSC. -

New Roots for New Music @ Festival TURBULENZEN
December 10, 2017 at 11:00am Radialsystem V - Berlin (ALLEMAGNE)New Roots for New Music
Symposium, December 10th 2017,
organized by Sandeep Bhagwati
My contribution to the symposium Extended voice: A Passage to Decolonized Artistic Practice
Description:
"New Music" was born in the 20th century as a eurocentric movement with the intent to conquer the world – and to occupy the future of music. But in the 21st century, we begin to understand that this "eurological" new music was just one tradition among many – and that the future of music will rather emerge from ear-to-ear conversations between a variety of coequal traditions. In this symposium, musicians, musicologists, listeners, thinkers will engage with the sonic realities and the dreams of those whose New Music draws on manifold roots.
With the participation of:
Prof. Amanda Bayley (Bath Spa University), Prof. Dr. Christian Utz, composer, musicologist (Kunstuniversität Graz), Harry Lehmann, music philosopher (Berlin), Nina Polaschegg, music journalist (Austrian Radio ORF Wien), Gabriel Dharmoo, singer, composer (Montréal), Matthias R. Entreß, music journalist (Berlin) Prof. Sameer Dublay, singer, composer (Flame University Pune), Dr. Julie Delisle, musicologist (Wien/Montréal), Prof. Sandeep Bhagwati, composer, researcher (Concordia University Montréal/Berlin), Stefan Östersjö, musician, researcher (Lund University Malmö), Prof. Il-Ryun Chung, composer (Akademie der Tonkunst Darmstadt), Artyom Kim, conductor (Omnibus Ensemble Taschkent), Nguyen Thanh Thuy, musician, music researcher (Hanoi/ Lund University Malmö), Jakhongir Shukur, composer (Tashkent), Katja Heldt, musicologist (Humboldt University Berlin), Dr. Elke Moltrecht (Akademie der Künste der Welt, Cologne)

Zungenmusiken (Tongue Musics - Musique des langues)
Artistic/Musical Director: Sandeep Bhagwati
Description: The tongue as a musical instrument: in our mouths - or in the reed instruments at home in so many traditions. "Tongue" is a word for language: song and speech are the twin children of the tongue – but are they truly kindred spirits? In this project, escorted by poets Christian Filips and Monika Rinck, Ensemble Extrakte embarks on an expedition into the musical heart of language – in a bid to discover new sounds and poetics for music. Ensemble Extrakte. Works by Sandeep Bhagwati, Deniza Popova, Catherine Milliken, Christian Filips and Monika Rinck

Conférence: Les dimensions éthiques de 'Anthropologies imaginaires'
July 08, 2016 at 2:30pm IICSI MUN Colloquium - St. John's (CANADA)
This paper will reflect on my experiences performing my piece, Anthropologies imaginaires, a structured improvisatory multimedia work (which will be presented as part of the 2016 Sound Symposium, in the days following the IICSI-MUN colloquium).Anthropologies imaginaires is a solo vocal performance, which interacts with a video mockumentary. Five actors featured in the video comment on eleven invented vocal traditions demonstrated through my voice and body, as singer-performer. These "traditions" are, to some degree, inspired by various folk and art music practices from across the world, but distorted through my own self-developed extended voice techniques. Every section explores a different type of singing, which is then developed through vocal improvisation. The project deals with questions such as power relations between different peoples, post-colonialism, post-exoticism, cultural extinction, globalization, normalized racism and cultural appropriation in an ambiguous, humorous and disturbing way.Delving into self-reflection, recent research in ethics in ethnographic research, published reviews and informal audience feedback received in the past year and a half, I wish to analyze the different ways in which this improv-based multimodal performance creates the basis for an intercultural dialogue as I have toured it to performance venues and festivals in Canada and Europe. -

I will present 2 papers and research-creation projects from the past year. Feel free to come for a specific presentation or stay for the whole time. I wish to share my recent ideas and get feedback.2:00 pm (30 min) Sensory Interplay in Carnatic Music: A paper about South Indian Carnatic music's relation to anthropology of the senses, sensorial hierarchy, ear-based vs. sight-based musicking, phenomenology and embodiment. The focus is on the recent use of visual and tactile tools used to notate, transcribe or capture the contours, behaviour and ornaments of Carnatic melodies.2:30 pm (20 min) Listening Session: Here's your chance to hear Les doigts dans les lignes (Orchestre Métropolitain) and the fog in our poise (Vancouver Symphony Orchestra). Both these compositions were premiered in the 2015-16 season and will not be available online (for contractual reasons).3:00 pm (40 min) Ethics in Anthropologies imaginaires: The intercultural themes of this live-arts project involved a certain amount of risk. The ethical concerns that surfaced and the creative strategies that emerged include the use of imaginary culture, the critical undertones of satire, the level of audience deception, the risk of offense, the role of humour and laughter, as well as the interdisciplinary nature of the show.3:40 pm (30 min) Lending Voices Presentation of a research-creation project based on songs from the Hindi movie Pyaasa (1957). The use of South Asian cultural references and the technique of 'shreds' - when the audio from a video is replaced most commonly for comedic purposes - has generated ideas for a future work, Brunir la voix. -
